These fine ocarinas have been designed and created by Anita Feng since 1974. They are individually made, first thrown on a potter's wheel and then altered and tuned, using smooth, high-fire clay. The ocarinas are not molded or mass-produced! Most ocarinas from other ocarina makers are made by a molding process. However, the process of turning the ocarina body on a wheel brings a greater structural integrity, therefore provides a sweeter, more resonant sound. The superior quality of sound does not come easily though. It requires both skilled wheel-throwing ability and highly trained ears for tuning the instrument. That's why very few make ocarinas this way. Each one of the Anita's ocarinas is developed to its most rich and resonant potential and the intervals are adjusted to their correct pitch. All instruments are checked carefully before shipment to insure their quality. A brief history and instructions with fingering chart are included with all orders.

The ocarina is an ancient folk instrument found in all parts of the world, in infinite shapes and tunings. It originated in Central and South America where it was used by native tribes. Each tribe had its own "tuning" and could be identified at a distance from the music played. The tone of an ocarina is haunting, rich, and unique. The word "ocarina" means "little goose" in Italian, referring to the shape that was developed there. Later, in America, it became known as the "sweet potato". Because the ocarinas are made from in relatively small, globular shapes, they are quite strong. They are not affected by any change in weather. They may be easily cleaned by hand or in a dishwasher. There is no lead in either the clay body or glaze.
